Obituary for Nora Black
NORA J. BLACK
AUSTINTOWN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m., preceded by closing prayers at 9:20 a.m. at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel for Nora J. Black, 93, who died on Sept. 28, 2012.
Mrs. Black was a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley.
She was born May 9, 1919, a daughter of Joseph and Carmella Comparato Ross (Rusciano) in the Brier Hill section of Youngstown.
She graduated from The Rayen School in 1937. She worked for six years as a bookkeeper at DeMichael’s Auto Collision Service on N. Walnut Street in Youngstown. During World War II, she worked for a short time at General Fireproofing, making wings for U.S. fighter planes.
In the early 1960s, she worked at the Ben Franklin store and the W.T. Grant store, both in the Austintown Plaza and in the layaway department of the J.C. Penney store in the Mahoning Plaza.
She married Edward D. Black, a Pearl Harbor survivor and GM Lordstown retiree, on June 26, 1943. Mr. Black died Oct. 11, 1988. Also preceding her in death were her parents; an uncle, Antonio Rusciano of Youngstown; sisters Minnie Folio and Mary Marino, both of Youngstown, Julia Vaccaro of Sharon, Pa. and Dukie Sich of Three Rivers, Mich.; brothers Anthony, Johnny, and Nicholas, all of Youngstown and Patrick of Hopedale, Ohio.
Surviving are three sisters-in-law, Linda, Margot and Elma.
She leaves her children, Daniel (Marcy) of Poland, Camille (Bill) Wade of Dearborn Heights, Mich. and Edward of Austintown; four grandchildren, Dan (Jennifer) Black of Hermitage, Pa., Monica (Tom) Farmakidis of McKinney, Texas, Matthew Taylor of Altadena, Calif., and Kenzie Black of Poland; five great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Autumn, and Allison Black of Hermitage, Pa., and Erin and David Wade of Dearborn, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the management and personnel of Community Caregivers of Boardman for their excellent care which enabled Mrs. Black to live at home, and the staff of Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman and Hospice of the Valley for making her comfortable during her final days of life. The family also thanks Dr.’s Douglas Musser, Michael Devine and Paul Pagano for the excellent care they provided Mrs. Black during the past decade.
