Jack L. McCartney (1928-2012)
Jack L. McCartney, 83, of Chester Township, passed away Sept. 12, 2012, at UHHS Geauga Medical Center in Claridon Township.
Born Nov. 9, 1928, in Franklin, Pa., he had been a resident of Chester Township since 1959.
Jack graduated in 1946 from Sugar Creek Township High School in Franklin, Pa., and in 1955 from Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He married Dorothy Gertrude Sutter Sept. 25, 1954, at Hope Lutheran Church in Cleveland Heights.
Jack was a member of the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club since 1974, serving as president of the club during the 1979-1980 year, and received the A.Z. Baker Service Award from Rotary International in 1980. He was active with the West Geauga Recreation Council from 1967 to 1970, the West Geauga Father's Club for five years, the Geauga YMCA board of managers for eight years, Boy Scout Troop 95 as committee chairman for five years, and the Grand Lodge of F & AM from 1956 until his passing. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling.
Jack volunteer for heart research in 1947, and was the first person in the mid-west to have a heart catheterization. He was also the first adult in the world to have a ventricular septal defect closure in 1957. The above led to the great advancements in heart surgery as we know it today.
Jack was a raw materials manager for Republic Steel Corporation in Cleveland from 1956 to 1984. He later worked as a sales manager for Arrow Terminals in Industry, Pa., from 1984 to 1991, and as a part-time field representative for the Geauga County Board of Elections from 1991 to 2009.
Survivors are his sons, Gregory Alan of Willoughby and James Edward (Cynthia) of Parma; daughters, Carol Louise McCartney of Auburn Township and Lynn Marie (Brian) Simione of Milton, Fla.; grandchildren, Patrick James McCartney and Brian Jr., Mario and Giovanni Simione; sisters, Frances L. Baker and Mary Lou (Jim) Kightlinger; and brother, Donald E. (Mildred).
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy G. (nee Sutter); daughter-in-law, Amy McCartney; parents, John and Mary McCartney; and sister, Darlene Howard.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Mayfield Church, 7747 Mayfield Road, Chester Township. Pastor Scott Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
