Obituary for DAPHNE VIRGINIA SANDBERG

Daphne Virginia (Wade) Sandberg, 88, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the Parkridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Daphne was born May 7, 1924, to Isaac and Etta Wade in Des Moines. She was baptized at the Apostolic Faith Church in July of 1936. Daphne attended Des Moines Public Schools and worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny during WWII. She was a WWII member of the USO at Camp Dodge, where she enjoyed planning and participating in dances and activities for the service men stationed there. She enjoyed music, especially country music, and played bass in her five-sister band. Daphne married Lester Reeves on January 12, 1946. To this union was born one daughter, Nadine. This marriage ended January 22, 1948. A relationship with Jerry Smith bore one daughter, Mary Ellen. On March 16, 1957, she married Paul Sandberg and to this union was born one son, Robert Paul. Daphne also enjoyed camping, church activities, sewing, collecting antique dolls, spending time with her family, and oil painting. She worked as an oil artist for Maxium, Gephart, and Dean Studios until her retirement in 1986. Daphne was a member of Apostolic Faith and Central Bible Church, where she taught Sunday school and was the Children Church minister. She was also member of the Professional Photographer Association and won many awards for her paintings. Daphne is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen (John) Raab-Rice; grandchildren, Julie Sigmund, Alesia Moeller, Chris Rice, Wade Raab, Jami Medchill, Chelsea Sandberg, and Heather Sandberg; great-grandchildren, Justin, Kyle, Christopher, Sadie, Brittany, Gavin, McKensi, Nikolas, and Jaylah; and her sisters, Rose Mary Jors and Catherine Gates. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Sandberg; sisters, Nelia, Ninia, Addie, Margaret, Ellen, and Violet; brothers, Carl Edward and Earnest Edgar; daughter, Nadine Rice; son, Robert Paul Sandberg; and great-grandson, Ryan Raab. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
