Obituary for NOLAN BENSON LONG

Nolan B. Long, 86, passed away in the arms of his loving Lord Friday January 13, 2012, while surrounded by his family. Nolan was born May 3, 1925, in Beaconsfield, Iowa, to Edwin and Ora (Osborn) Long.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Dresler) of Des Moines; their four children, Craig & Anita Long (Altoona), Neal & Lisa Long (Andover, Massachusetts), Doreen & Mark Schlabaugh (Kalona), and Suzanne & Keith Hanson (Bouton); ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and his dear sister Delma Grimm (Ogden, Utah).

Nolan retired from John Deere in 1989, after 25 years of service. He was a dedicated Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop’s 85 and 52, earning the honor of God and Service and numerous other awards throughout more than 30 years in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a 50-year Mason at Eastgate Masonic Lodge #630 AF&AM. Nolan received a Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal for his service in Japan, and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1947. He was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church in Des Moines. After retirement he became an active member of the HyVee/Dahl’s coffee clubs and greatly valued the friendships that developed over the years.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, January 16, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet visitors from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
