Obituary for MARY MARGARET SCHNATHORST

Mary Margaret Schnathorst, 101, of Rogers, AR, formerly of Des Moines, died Monday, December 26, 2011, at Legacy Circle of Life Hospice in Bentonville, AR, after a brief illness. A funeral Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., with a vigil service at 6 p.m., on Friday, December 30, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Mary was born in Severe, IA, on November 21, 1910, to John and Jennie Vardo. She grew up in Colfax, Iowa, and graduated from Colfax High School in June 1929. She was married to Gilbert H. Schnathorst on the 17th of August, 1929. Born to this union were three daughters, Gloria Welp of Newton, IA, Mary Janet Heckart of Des Moines, and Julie Hoggard of Rogers, AR. They made their home in Des Moines. Mary worked for many years for Glen, Henry and Richard Hanson. Mary moved to Rogers, AR in 2007, and was a resident at Innisfree Senior Living. Mary will be remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as a loving and devoted mother and homemaker. Mary loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, was an avid embroiderer and made many tea towels for family and friends. Mary was a 60+ year member of All Saints Catholic Church. Mary is survived by her three daughters, Gloria Welp, Mary Janet Heckart, Julie (J.O.) Hoggard; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sister, Amelia Zoutte of Knoxville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Gilbert (dec’d June 1990); three son-in-laws, Bob McDonough, Gary Heckart, and Leon Welp; one granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn Welp; her parents; five sisters, Catherine Vardo, Elizabeth Sally, Albena Darr, Margaret McDaniel, and Jennie Woodrow; as well as her brother, Bert Vardo.
