Obituary for Stephen Jr. Fercana
STEPHEN PAUL FERCANA JR
YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, at the Cornersburg Baptist Church for Stephen Paul Fercana Jr., 79, who passed away on Nov. 23, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born in Youngstown, on Aug. 9, 1931, the son of Stephen Paul and Ruth Miriam (Robertson) Fercana and was a life-long area resident.
After graduating from East High School, Paul joined the Ohio National Guard in 1948, and was stationed at Camp Polk, La., with Battery C, 135th Field Artillery. After working as a salesman for Monumental Life Insurance, he joined his father and brothers to form the Fercana Trucking Company, later working as a self-employed driver. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, Lodge 481, where he was a 32nd degree Mason.
A lifelong musician, in his youth Paul was a member of the National Championship-winning Girard VFW Band, and played saxophone for the military band while in the Ohio National Guard. After his honorable discharge, he studied clarinet and saxophone at the Dana School of Music. In addition to his own quartet, Paul played with both the Youngstown and Canfield Community Bands. He was an active member of the Cornersburg Baptist Church, where he belonged to numerous committees and sang in the choir.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 52 years, Donna Jean (Safranic) Fercana, whom he married Feb. 15, 1958; two sons, George (Cathy) Fercana of Florence, S.C. and Stephen Paul Fercana III, of Austintown; one daughter, Ruth (Jack) Madden of Canfield; seven grandchildren, George, Katelan and Dante Fercana and Jaclyn (Jonathan Terleski), Christie, Candace and Ruthie Madden; and a sister, Carole Jean (Peter) Venorsky of Austintown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Robert, William, David and James Fercana.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St.in Boardman and from 10:30 to 10:55 a.m. on Monday at the church prior to services.
Interment will be at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens, with full military honors provided by the great men of the Trumbull County American Legion.
