Obituary for ROBERT RONALD STURDEVANT

Robert Ronald Sturdevant, 84, was born June 22, 1925 in Des Moines, the son of Jacob and Lillian (Anderson) Sturdevant. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Bob graduated from East High School in 1943. In 1957, he opened Sturdevant Dental Studio in the Bankers Trust Building and was a successful business owner for 34 years, retiring in 1991. Bob proudly served his country in World War II in the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS St. Lo which was sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Miller) Sturdevant. Bob served as the President of the Iowa Dental Laboratory Association. He was an avid fisherman enjoying his time spent outdoors, especially his travels to Minnesota. Bob's favorite pastimes included gardening, creating stained glass pieces and anything that involved working with his hands. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family and friends. Robert is survived by his son, Jeff (Alisa) Sturdevant; daughter, Nancy (Rick) Boers; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara; his brother, William Sturdevant and his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th St. SW in Altoona. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery where military honors will be provided. Friends may visit with family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW.
