Obituary for Florence Bamidele Malomo

Mrs. Florence Bamidele Malomo was born on March 6th, 1950, to late Pa Theophilus Omosanya Ajayi and late Ma Victoria Tinuola Ajayi. Pa Theophilus Omosanya hailed from the Ajayi Adefowope family of Ijebu Odogbolu, Ogun state, while Ma Victoria Tinuola Ajayi hailed from Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Florence Bamidele attended St Andrews Elementary school Ibara Abeokuta from 1956 to 1959 and St. John’s Molete Ibadan from 1959 to 1962.

She was very active in sports and was part of the athletics relay team in her school. She attended Abeokuta Girls Grammar School for her high school education from 1962 to 1967 and she was offered a scholarship by the Western State Government of Nigeria. While she was there, she was also very active in sports and earned the nickname “Florico”. She became the anchor person of her relay team. In addition, she was chosen as the athletic prefect and captain for the entire school. She represented her school during many competitions and won several medals. She attended Abeokuta Grammar School for her Advanced School Certificate course from 1967 to 1969.

She completed this course passing with flying colors. She joined the Ministry of Finance in the old Western region as a Senior Tax Officer from 1970 to 1975. She met her husband, the late Dr Timothy Olujide Malomo in 1971 and they were married at a Registry ceremony in Ibadan in 1972. The marriage was blessed with five children, Kunle, Kemi, Kofo, Kayode and Abosede (late).

 Her late husband was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Theater Arts, University of Ibadan from 1972 to 2007. She travelled with him while he was a visiting Professor at Babcock University Ilisan, Ogun state, Nigeria, NorthWestern University, Evanston, Illinois and also at Sojourner Douglass University in Baltimore, Maryland from 1997 to 1998. She came to the United States of America with her husband on study leave from 1975 to 1977 where she studied Taxation, Computer Operations and Programming. On arrival from the US, she was employed by the University of Ibadan Computing Center as a program manager from 1977 to 1998.

She obtained a diploma degree in Adult Education and Community Development from the University of Ibadan. She retired as a computer manager in 1998. Upon retirement, Florence became an entrepreneur, starting businesses in catering and retail.

She is a devoted and prayerful grandmother blessed with five children and 11 grandchildren. She was active in both her church and local community. She is a member of Women Christian League All Souls’ Church Bodija, Ibadan, YWCA, the Friend’s Club International, University of Ibadan Women Society. She fulfilled her lifelong dream of taking a Christian pilgrimage to Jersusalem in 2015. She enjoyed going to the theater, answering on her favourite TV show, Jeopardy, watching competitive sports and joining Zoom calls every Sunday evening at 5:00pm with her children and grandchildren.
