At age 97, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 29, 2023. Born in Olympia, Washington on October 23, 1925. Son of Alice Crawford Gaul and Dr. A.C.A. Gaul, both deceased. Beloved husband of 59 years of Joan (Boffa). Father of Stuart (Ann) and Christopher (Karen). Grandfather of Ellen, Ryan, Elizabeth, and Joanna. Son-in-law of Renato ("Sy") and Kathryn Boffa, both deceased. Brother-in-law of Robert (Michelle, deceased) Boffa. Proud graduate of Stadium High School (Tacoma, Washington), Reed College, and Harvard Law School. Member and elder of Broadway United Church of Christ (formerly Broadway Tabernacle) in New York City and Sixth Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Served as a radio man with the United States Army, 158th Regimental Combat Team ("Bushmasters"), in New Guinea, in combat in the Philippines, and in the occupation of Japan. Lawyer and member of the Bars of New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania for, severally, more than sixty-five years. Practiced law for fourteen years in New York City, for many years in Pittsburgh with the United States Steel Corporation and Aristech Chemical Corporation, in Houston with Westlake Chemical Corporation, and as of counsel to Thorp, Reed & Armstrong in Pittsburgh. Active in charitable and political affairs in New York City, including organization of Amsterdam Community Center (now Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center), a settlement house. Loved to travel with his wife and their friends. Organized family vacations that were as memorable as he hoped they would be. Grew to enjoy the sporting events to which his sons dragged him. Avid reader. Justified admirer of his own grilling skills. Decided at age sixty that he needed to get in shape, and kept it going for more than thirty years. He was an amazing husband and father. His family thanks the staff at Vincentian de Marillac for their care and support over the last year. He liked flowers but would have been happier if you make a donation to something in which you believe. A memorial service will be held at Sixth Presbyterian Church, Forbes and Murray Avenues, Pittsburgh, on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Professional services trusted to D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY LTD., Lawrenceville. www.dalessandroltd.com.
