Obituary for Mrs. Joyce F. Rothermel

Joyce F. (Moyer) Rothermel, 80, of Rockland Township, died suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, November 20, 2021, in the home she was born in, where she was raised by her grandmother Verna H. (Eckert) Flicker. It's the same home where she also lived her married life and raised her own family in.  She was the wife of Horace W. Rothermel.  They were married November 28, 1959.  Joyce was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. Moyer and the late Dorothy L. (Flicker) Moyer Schlegel.  Joyce was first a member of New Jerusalem United Church of Christ Church, where she served as sexton for many years.  She also was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years, played piano for Sunday School, was a member of the Ladies Aide Society, a member of the Sunshine Society, a Consistory member, and choir member.  Following the closure of the U.C.C. church, Joyce joined her husband, Horace at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church where they are both members, and assisted him with his sexton duties.

 

Joyce worked for over 100 people in her community for over 40 years doing house cleaning.  She was also involved in Fleetwood Grange No. 1839 for many years.  During her time at Fleetwood she held the office of Lecturer.  Joyce was a banquet and festival server. Joyce was a member of Berks County Pomona Grange, Pennsylvania State Grange, and The National Grange.

 

Joyce was a member of Fleetwood Senior Citizens where she was chaplain and pianist.  She was also a member of Pricetown Senior Citizens where she was chaplain.  Joyce enjoyed playing BINGO, doing word search puzzles, enjoyed gardening, crocheting, making fastnachts and baking shoofly pies. She loved hearing stories about her grandchildren and spending time with them.  Joyce enjoyed reading her Bible daily and journaling.

 

In addition to her husband of 61 years, Horace, Joyce is survived by her children: Debbie A. (Rothermel), wife of Chris A. Reinhard, Rockland Township; Milton L., husband of Faith A. (Garman) Rothermel, Alsace Township; Karen L. (Rothermel), wife of Sean P. Eck, Sussex County, DE.  Other survivors include 13 grandchildren:  Jeremy A. Reinhard; Melanie A. (Reinhard) Fritch; Aaron M. Reinhard; Michelle G. (Reinhard) Hertzog; Jason N. Reinhard; Angelee F. (Rothermel) Kramer; Lauren T. (Rothermel) Sylva; Andrew L. Rothermel; Joshua W. Buck; Joseph P. Eck; N. Scott Buck; and Christina M. (Eck) Patchett.  28 Great Grandchildren:  Emily E. Reinhard; Jared A. Reinhard; Jacob N. Reinhard; Joshua M. Reinhard; Hannah J.L. Yost; Noah E. Yost; James J. Reinhard; Daniel M. Reinhard; Naomi D. R. Reinhard; Esther M. R. Reinhard; Kerry W. Hertzog; Calvin A. Hertzog; Baby Hertzog; Ethan D. Kramer; Adalyn J. Kramer; Baby Kramer; Elsie A. Sylva; Aletta R. Sylva; Lona J. Sylva; Conner G. Buck; Weston A. Buck; Evangeline E. Buck; Ashley M. Martin; Jessica N. Lamborn; Marshall P. Eck; Skyler J. Patchett; and Arya M. Patchett.  3 Great-Great Grandchildren:  Jace M. Gerhardt; Nixon J. Gerhardt; and Jenson F. Briggs.  There are 5 brothers and 2 sisters:  Noel D., Bruce E., Glenn A., Barry L. and Elton J. Schlegel; Donna M. (Schlegel) Kline, and Kathleen M. (Schlegel) Gotwals.  In addition to her parents Joyce was predeceased by a granddaughter, Taylor H. Rothermel,  a Great Grandson, Christopher A. Hertzog; and a brother Marvin F. Schlegel.

 

A funeral service to celebrate and honor Joyce's life will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown.  Interment in New Jerusalem Union Cemetery, Rockland Township.  Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  Memories and condolences may be shared at www.ludwickfh.com.
