H. Richard Shugar, 87, passed away on June 10, 2021, in his Muhlenberg Township residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 24, 1933, in Reading, he was the son of the late John William Shugar and Adalaide Stout. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Kaleda) Shugar to whom he was married February 28, 1987. Richard was a 1951 graduate of Wyomissing High School, as well as the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute. He was employed with Textile Machine Works, and later, Carpenter Technology, where he retired from after 31 years as a furnace firer. After retirement, he worked at the Santander Arena as an usher and the Reading Fightin’ Phils as a parking lot attendant, where he was famously known as Richard “Banklot” Shugar. Richard was a member of Chandler Lodge #227 of Free and Accepted Masons and was a past member of the Scottish Rite Masons. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Shangri-La. Surviving in addition to his spouse, are his two sons: Thomas R. Shugar of Reading; and Mark T., husband of Jessie Shugar of Georgetown, DE; his four step-daughters: Kathleen A. Gantert of Reading; Carol L., wife of Joel Esser of Mohrsville; Lisa M., wife of Brian Stauffer of Leesport; and Stacy A. Linderman and her significant other, Matt Mayer of Spring Township. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and has one great-grandchild on the way. In addition, he is survived by his sister: Camille B. Weinrich of Reading. Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Judith N. Boyer. Services will be held on Tuesday, June 15th at 11:30am at Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 am. Entombment, with military honors, will be held at Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
