Obituary for James F Smith

JAMES F. SMITH NEW MIDDLETOWN - Private family services were held for James F. Smith, 91, who died early Sunday morning at Masternick Memorial Health Center in New Middletown. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Whitewood, Va., a son of Caleb Charles and Dora Ellen Patrick Smith. “Jim” was a graduate of Hazard High School in Whitewood. He was an employee at the Blast Furnace Division of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., retiring in 1978. Jim served his country during World War ll and the Korean conflict as a member of the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a Cub Master and a lover of all sports, especially the Cleveland Indians and the University of Kentucky Wild Cats. Jim was affectionately known by his friends and co-workers as “Smitty.”
Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Beverly Jean Magnuson, whom he married Oct. 11, 1952; three daughters and a son, Denise (Alan) Gracon of Lyndhurst, Debbie Kalasky of New Middletown, Karl Kalasky of Canfield, Deanna McCrea of Chicago and Douglas (Patricia) Smith of Lititz, Pa.; his sister, Louise Smith of Tipp City; his grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Gracon, Monica Kalasky of Austintown, Carrie Kalasky of Boardman, Megan (Ronnie) Campbell of Gettysburg, Pa., Gianna and Aidan Smith, and Tyler and Hunter McCrea; and a great-grandson, Camden Loto. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Edith Robinson and Mary Smith; and his brothers, Leo, Mason and Franklin Smith.
