Obituary for Hazel D Hollinger

Hazel Dorothy Hollinger

1917 -- 2014

Hazel Dorothy Hollinger was a lover of God and His written word, the Bible. She was ever seeking to trust and obey Him. She was also a lover of people, especially children. She loved her family, birth and church family. Hazel Dorothy accepted the need for Jesus in her life as a teenager. He spoke to her through his Word in Psalm 19 as she served in the mountains of Haiti as a missionary-evangelist.

After her second cancer surgery in 1983 the Lord blessed Hazel Dorothy using his Holy Word in Psalm 118:17, where He said she would not die but live and declare the works of God. So she lifted up her hands and head in the sanctuary and praised the Lord, Psalm 134:2. This faithful servant was a 40-plus year survivor of cancer by the grace of God.

Hazel Dorothy served God with her life as a Sunday school teacher at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She also sang in the church choir. Prayer meetings were held in her home (circle #6) where she also taught neighborhood children about the Lord. Her message to everyone is to seek always to obey the Word of God, watch God work in your life and be thankful. I Thessalonians 5:18

She was born in Keene, Kentucky on July 7, 1917. Her father brought the family to Altman, Ohio. On February 2, 1942 she was united in marriage to J. C. Hollinger. To that union seven children were born.

She was predeceased by her husband J.C. and three of her children, John Jr., Arthur Lee, and Lillian Ann Hollinger. She leaves to celebrate her life, daughters, Rev. Dr. Wanda (Leroy) Sprinkle of Lexington, Ohio and Deborah (James) Whetstone of Akron, Ohio; sons, Mark Hollinger of Atlanta, Ga. and Elvis (Gina) Hollinger; along with many other family members and friends.

She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, but when she was not able to attend, her additional church family was Summit Christian Church with Pastor Mike Martin. She would walk from her apartment building to worship there. Never did she ever have to walk back home, the church family displayed their love and gave her a ride. She only walked to church to get exercise.

Her calling hours and celebration service will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Sommerville Funeral Home, 1695 Diagonal Road, Akron, Ohio 44320, with service to immediately follow; officiating Pastor Dennis Butts of The House of the Lord; eulogy by Pastor William C. Bunton of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Condolences for the family may be sent to 855 Nome Ave., Akron, OH 44320.
