Obituary for Verdia M. Young

Verdia Mae Young

Verdia Mae Young, 83, was released from her human existence and rewarded her final and eternal destiny on July 28, 2014, surrounded by her family.

She was born to Lamar and Estelle Jones on July 17, 1931 in Hahira, Georgia. Verdia graduated from Valdosta High School in Valdosta, Ga. and moved to Akron, Ohio in 1954. She worked at Hawthorn Veterans Hospital, City Hospital and Akron Public Schools, last working at North High School from where she retired.

She joined the Macedonia Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the Usher Board and Welcome Committee under the pastoral leadership of Frank A. Williams, Sr. Verdia enjoyed cooking and baking for her family; she especially enjoyed Sunday evening gatherings with family and friends at her home. She spent countless hours beautifying her lawn; she would sit on the front porch admiring the lawn, waving and talking to the neighbors whom she loved so dearly.

Preceded in death by her husband, Henry D. Young, Sr.; son, Ricky; parents, Lamar and Estelle Jones; brothers, Lawrence, Leonard and Ernest Jones; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jake and Martha Young; sister-in-law, Fannie Pearson; brother-in-law Joseph Young.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Gregg P. (Connie) and Danny (Kenya) Young of Akron, Ohio; brother, Lessie D. Jones; sisters, Mary Pitts, Ruby (John) Jackson, all of Akron, Ohio, Beatrice Arnold, Margie (Calvin) Davis, Lowell Tillman, Vivian (Anthony) Cody, all of Valdosta, Ga.; grandchildren, Tamara (Nang) Kim of Columbus, Ohio, Khadijah and H. Daniel Young of Akron, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Zecheriah and Nina Kim of Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Carol Jones; brothers-in-law, Owensby Pearson, both of Akron, Ohio, Charles (Ruth) Young, Moreno Valley, Calif.; goddaughter, Janice B. Mercier-Wade; godsons, Dave Melton, Bryant Robinson, Treveaire Davis, and Nate Smith, all of Akron, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014, 12 noon at the Macedonia Baptist Church, 940 McKinley Ave., Akron, with Pastor Lorenzo Glenn eulogizing. Friends may call at the church from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Interment at Mount Peace Cemetery. Procession will form from 1198 Bellflower Road and condolences may be sent to 294 Misty Lane, Copley, Ohio 44321.
