The Life of ROBERT AYRES EVANS

Robert A. (Bob) Evans, beloved husband of Patricia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by his family. He was born in Des Moines on January 22, 1926 to Robert and Merle (Ayres) Evans and lived on the South side of Des Moines for over 50 years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Cornerstone Family Church, 3114 SW 61st Street with burial following at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2014 at the church.

Bob graduated from Des Moines North High School and proudly served on board the USS Turner in the United States Navy during WWII. Following his military service (where he would want us to note he developed his sincere hatred of Spam), Bob graduated from Drake University with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. In later years he was a graduate of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and served as Chief Communications Officer with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Bob retired from the State of Iowa after serving the Department of Public Safety for many years. In his retirement, Bob was a recipient of the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer award. He was a master amateur/MARS radio operator, very handy and could fix or build just about anything. He was a lifelong member of the Radio Club of America and the American Legion, enjoying yard work and gardening in his free time. In recent years Bob was the loving caretaker of his wife “Patty” and ever-in-search of the cheapest cup of coffee he could find, especially enjoyed time he spent with dear friends as a member of McDonald’s Morning Coffee Club. Over the noon hour he loved swapping lies with Francie’s Lunch Bunch where his favorite waitresses always had his iced tea waiting.

In addition to his wife Patricia, Bob is survived by his daughters, Debbie Williams, Renee (John) Swallow and Angelique (Daniel) Adams; grandchildren, David (Missy) Williams, Michael Williams, Sara Williams, Megan (Rob) Robinson, Carrie (Clint) Meek, Rebekah Swallow, Anna (David) Pfaltzgraff, Jenna Swallow, Emily Swallow, Katherine Adams and Jonathan Adams; great-grandchildren, Victoria, Miley, Zander, Sadie and Ian; nieces, Kathy Griffith, Karen Meek and Kim Austin; He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy (Geil) Evans; and his granddaughter, Marjorie Louise Swallow.

In accordance with his wishes, the family suggests memorial contributions may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate or Hospice of Central Iowa, www.hospiceofcentraliowa.org.
