The Life of OTTO BERNARD DENNIS

Otto Bernard (Barney) Dennis, Urbandale, passed away Thursday, October 17 at Mercy West Hospital at 93 years of age. He was born July 13, 1920 in Des Moines to Roscoe and Jesse Pauline Dennis. He graduated from North High School in Des Moines. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II as a tank driver and was awarded the Purple Heart on July 21, 1944. He returned to Des Moines and was employed at the Firestone plant (later Bridgestone) as a warehouse manager. He married Delia (Dee) Fulton in 1947 in Des Moines. They raised their family of three sons and one daughter in Urbandale IA.Throughout his life, Barney was involved in the Urbandale Park Board, Lions Club, and Urbandale High School Athletics. His commendable contributions to local athletics led to the naming of the Barney Dennis Open softball tournament after him. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes holding season tickets for a great number of years.As well as an avid Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Vikings fan. He was preceded in death by son, Randy, brother Mac, sister Dorothy, father Roscoe, and mother Pauline. He is survived by his wife, Dee, sons Greg and Chris, daughter Cindy Kelling, son-in-law Chip, daughter-in-law Becky, daughter-in-law Janie, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday Oct 21 at Westover Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Tuesday Oct 22 at 10:00 am. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.>>
