The Life of JOHN HENRY JENKINS

John H. Jenkins, 80, passed away at his home in West Des Moines on August 10, 2013. He was born August 3, 1933, in Vermillion, Illinois, to Barthloemew and Janie Jenkins. John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed with Hy-Line and retired after many years of service. John helped his wife, Jennie operate JJ’s Café in Johnston for 25 years. He attended Westchester Evangelical Free Church and was a volunteer at Fountain West, where he assisted with Bingo and took care of the birds. John loved his man cave in the garage where he was often found tinkering around and building things. John is survived by his son, Carroll (Enola) Jenkins; daughters, Connie (Bill Heckman) Baumgardner and Cheryl (James) Jorgensen; step-daughters, Linda Salomon, Shirley (Jerry) Curtis, Carolyn (David) Jensen, and Vicki (Tim) Everrett; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Jenkins, and his siblings, Frank and Mary. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Fountain West in loving memory of John.>>
