The Life of GLENDELL LEWIS TAGGART

Glendell “Glen” Taggart, 83, passed away June 23, 2013, at Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines. Glendell was born to George and Amanda Taggart on March 2, 1930, in New Virginia, Iowa. He graduated from Indianola High School and attended Simpson College for two years. After high school, he worked at Quality Cleaners in Indianola, and he served his country honorably in the United States Army, 300th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, in the Korean conflict. Glendell married Kay Jewell on June 10, 1961, at Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. They were blessed with two children. Glendell worked for Firestone for 25 years and Younkers for nearly 20. He was a member of the Warren County Masonic Lodge, serving as Grand Master, and a long-time member of Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. Glendell was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. He cherished time with family and friends and will be remembered as a consummate gentleman and gracious host. He enjoyed baking and was even awarded a blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair for his peanut brittle. He also enjoyed traveling and Iowa Hawkeye football. Glendell is survived by his children, Jim (Becky) Taggart and Jane (Duane) Willey; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Travis Taggart, and Nile, Clare, Cole, and Grace Willey; sisters, Georgianna Rose and Margaret Browning; and nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay, and sisters, Doris Thompson and Berniece Griffin. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Life Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association, in loving memory of Glendell. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Edgewater and Wesley Life Hospice for their love and care of Glendell.
