The Life of ELLEN MAE OBER

Ellen Ober met her Savior on June 1, 2013. Ellen Mae Quick was born April 2, 1918, in Ankeny, IA, to Peter and Anna Quick. She was raised on a farm south of Ankeny, along with her seven brothers and three sisters. Ellen graduated from Ankeny High School in May 1934 at the age of 16. She worked at Republic Insurance Company in Des Moines, before moving to California with her brother Harvey and her sister Ann, where she worked at Richfield Oil in Los Angeles. In California, she met Harold Ober on May 20, 1942, and they were married on October 28, 1942 at the Little Country Church of Hollywood, CA. Harold was enlisted in the Army Air Corps. They settled in Ankeny, IA, after he finished his active duty. Harold and Ellen raised five children: Dennis (Diana) and Richard (Lynn) of Des Moines, and Sherman (Janet), Herbert (Angie), and Christine (Glen) Chapman of Salem, OR. She delighted in her 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, which brought her great joy. Ellen was known for her generous hospitality, her amazing “green thumb,” and her delicious pies. Most of all she will be remembered for her deep love for the Lord. Ellen trusted Jesus as her personal Savior at age 16, and her life was a demonstration of her love for God. She taught Sunday school, played the piano and organ, hosted missionaries, and held Bible studies for women in her home for over 30 years. Her children saw her studying her Bible and praying every morning and today they “rise up and call her blessed.” As a faithful prayer warrior, she prayed for every family member everyday, as well as for many others. Ellen’s desire for the epitaph was, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” - Matthew 25:21, Memorial services will be Friday, June 7, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Saylorville Baptist Church, 6429 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to Saylorville Baptist Church Missions Funds or Hospice of Central Iowa.
