The Life of QUENTIN OTTO PYLE

Quentin O. Pyle, 91, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Kavanagh House on 56th Street, from complications due to cancer. Mr. Pyle was born April 3, 1921, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, to John and Daisy Pyle. After his mother’s passing in 1925, he was raised in Des Moines by his uncle, Archie Cunningham, and Quentin’s grandmother, Cornelia Cunningham. His wife Sarah “Betty,” from Washington, Iowa, died October 17, 1993. He is survived by his two sons, Donald Kirk Pyle of Des Moines, and Robert Alan Pyle of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Mr. Pyle was a graduate of North High School, and a proud WWII veteran who served four years in the Army Air Corps. He was a gunner on B-17s during the war and was awarded an Honorable Discharge from the United States Military in 1945. Before and after his military service he worked as a butcher at a butcher shop located on Ingersoll Avenue. In 1955, Mr. Pyle became a sales agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was honored with multiple sales accolades throughout a 30-year career, and first to receive the 1 Million Dollar Debit Agent Producer Award in the State of Iowa. He retired in 1985. Mr. Pyle was an avid pitch player and he loved to fish for walleye at lakes in Minnesota and western Ontario, Canada. As a long standing member of the Des Moines Izaak Walton League, he could be found most every Tuesday enjoying a game of cards with friends. He also had a passion for sports and loved to follow the Chicago Cubs. He was a hard-working soul with a tremendous work ethic. Quentin was also a loving father, caring husband and a man who will be greatly missed by his remaining family members and many close friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 15, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, followed by burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
