Allan Dexter Coombs, 78, of Avon, beloved husband of Marsha (Mainstruck) Coombs, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the UConn Health Center in Farmington. He was born August 25, 1933 in Waterbury to the late John D. and Miriam (Sweet) Coombs. Allan served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army and went on to earn his B.S. from Boston University as well as his MSFS, ChFC and CLU from The American College. Allan started his career with IBM after college and went on to work in the insurance and financial services industry which led to a four-decade career helping clients to achieve financial security and independence. He had a primary affiliation with Penn Mutual for much of his career where he was recognized as a member of the Royal Blue Club on four occasions and became a life and qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He served as President of the Hartford Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and in various volunteer positions within the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and MDRT. For the last 15 years he owned and ran his own financial services firm in Farmington. Allan was a lifelong learner who placed a high value on education (just ask his children and grandchildren about his grammar lessons and math quizzes). He had an incredible mind where he would recall telephone numbers, birth dates, and policy numbers from memory – a good trait for someone in the insurance industry. Allan was an avid fan of the UConn Women’s Basketball team and enjoyed watching them play and win championships. He was a loving father who cherished time spent with family and will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife of 21 years, Marsha, he is survived by his son, Don Coombs, and his wife Wendy of Rye, NY; his brother, John Coombs and his wife Barbara of Macon, GA, his grandchildren, Joshua, Alison, and Emma Heather Coombs. Allan also leaves his stepsons, Jeff Kingsbury of San Francisco and Kevin Kingsbury of Somerville, MA. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his daughter, Heather Coombs, of Fort Collins, CO and his aunt, Florence Diane, of Alexandria, VA. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan’s memory may be made to the UConn Health Center at www.friends.uconn.edu/uchc.
