The Life of Jack Wilson Scarbrock

Born in Alexandria, LA on June 22, 1922, Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Breaux Scarbrock, originally from Church Point, his 3 children, Sharon Steen, Lafayette, Diane Gele, Austin, TX, and Richard Scarbrock, Spring Branch, TX, a son-in-law, Stephen Gele, Austin, TX, a daughter-in-law, Joy Scarbrock, Spring Branch, TX. He was the proud grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 6. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Ewell Scarbrock, his mother, Jenny Eliza Jirles Scarbrock, a brother, Belvin Scarbrock and a sister, Hazel Scarbrock Moore and a grandson, Benjamin Gele. Pallbearers are Richard Scarbrock, Stephen Gele, Andrew Scarbrock, Andrew Rust, Gary Scarbrock and Jason Johnston. Jack’s career began in Pineville, LA after serving in the Army stationed in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After graduating from ULL (SLI) in 1947 with a B.S. in Business Administration and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, his career took him from Pineville Gas Co., to Cleco in Natchitoches and then in Lafayette as Treasurer of Cleco. Jack was named senior vice president and assistant to the President at Trans LA. Gas Co. until his retirement in 1985. After retirement, golf became his full time job. Travel was another of his passions. His many civic accomplishments included President of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce in 1975, campaign chair of the United Way of Acadiana in 1974 , president of the United Way in 1975, Sertoma “Service to Mankind Award” in 1975 and Civic Cup Award in 1975. He was an active member of the Lion’s Club serving as president in Pineville and Lafayette. Jack served as president of the Lafayette Area Safety Council, Board of Directors of the Acadiana Arts Council, and represented the college of commerce on the USL Alumni Foundation. He was also on the Oakbourne Country Club Board of Directors. Jack was a lot like Will Rogers, in that, “he never met a man he didn’t like.” Those fortunate enough to know Jack felt the same way about him. Funeral services will be held at Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive on Wednesday September 29, 2010 at 1:00 PM with viewing on Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 3:00 until 7:00pm and continuing Wednesday from 8:00 AM until services. Reverend Daniel Edwards, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church, will officiate. Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
