The Life of HOWARD RAY EIDE

Howard Ray Eide of 1201 Chautauqua Parkway, a former Des Moines Police Chief, died of a heart ailment Wednesday at Charter Community Hospital. He was 79. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, and burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Highland Park Funeral Home. Mr. Eide joined the Des Moines Police Force in 1935. He was named Chief of Police in 1954 and served in the capacity nearly eight years. He retired in 1971 after serving eight years as chief jailer for the Polk County Sheriff''s Department. From 1962 to 1964 he was a deputy sheriff. Eide was a legislative lobbyist for the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers at the time of his death. Born in Garden City, he lived in Des Moines most of his life and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Corinthian Masonic Lodge and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a son, Michael of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Marcia Johnson of Des Moines; a brother, Clarke of Rochester, Minn.; and two sisters, Fannie Watts of Cedar Falls and Esther Daniels of Charleston, S.C.
