Carl was born January 7, 1915 in Des Moines to Otto and Martha Appell, who immigrated from Sweden.  Carl was the fourth of eight children.

After graduating from East High School in 1934, he attended Augustana College and worked at Lutheran Hospital and Younkers before entering the Army Medical Corp, serving in Europe during WWII.  He served his country until June 1946.  After the service he joined the US Postal Service and remained a faithful employee until his retirement in 1977.

On October 22, 1950, Carl married Evelyn Christopher.  They had three daughters.  A member of St. John''s Lutheran church for 56 years, he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for ten years, Church Council for twelve years and was on the Elder Board.  Carl''s faith and church life was very important to him, always making sure his daughters attended church and Sunday school, Wednesday church school and confirmation classes.

Carl loved his country and was an active member of the Highland Park Legion Post #374, serving as Commander, Chaplain and was a member of the Ceremonial Squad.  He was also active in Forty and Eight and Sons of Norway.

When Carl retired, he also enjoyed traveling with his wife, collecting his HO trains - designing an elaborate train village, woodworking in his basement shop, learning the piano, attempting to master the game of golf, watching college football (go Hawkeys) and most of all, spending time with family and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Ethel Morgan, Esther Wade, Ruth Roth and Mildred Forsyth.  He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; brothers, Bob of Fostoria, OH, Don of Des Moines and sister, Catherine Gustafson of Menomonee Falls, WI.  Survivors also include his three daughters, Susan (Clair) Westby of Indian Harbour Beach, FL, Nancy (Dennis) Schummer of Roswell, NM; Diane (Bill) Sexton of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Alana (Wes) Breeden of Alachua, FL, Brandon Westby of Jacksonville, FL, Erin and Emily Sexton of West Des Moines and one great-grandson, Andrew Breeden.

Carl was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, neighbor and friend.  He always put others before himself and valued family, faith and service.  We will miss him dearly.

Memorials may be made to either his church or the Legion Post #374.

Hamilton''s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. is handling arrangements.
