The Life of MILDRED HAZEL M SPENCER

Mildred H. Spencer, 94, passed away October 17, 2009. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in Johnston, Iowa at McAuley Terrace Chapel, 5921 Winwood Drive. Mildred was born September 1, 1915 in Enid, OK to Violet (Hatch) and Carmen Kester. Her early years were not easy, as her mother died when Mildred was very young. She was passed from relative to relative. But a strong and determined woman she was. She attended college and received her teaching certificate. Later, she met Dwight Spencer and they were married on May 20, 1937. They lived in Gary, IN and when Dwight returned from WWII and the South Pacific, they made their home in Des Moines. Mildred was an active mom. Serving as a Girl Scout troop leader, Cub Scout den mother, assisting the youth group at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church and was herself a member of the Priscilla Club from the mid 1940’s. Mildred was a loving mother, great cook, and also enjoyed gardening and her flowers. She and Dwight enjoyed traveling the country by car and after he passed, Mildred enjoyed trips to Europe, a cruise to Alaska and visiting her brother in Nice, France. Mildred was also very involved with her genealogy research. Survivors include her children, Jerry (Carolyn) Spencer, Jean Buchanan; 3 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
