The Life of RICHARD WILLIAM DORRELL SR.

Richard William "Dick" Dorrell, Sr., 82, passed from this life on Monday, February 14, 2011, in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 18, at First Federated Church, located at 4801 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines, of which he was a member. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. Dick was born on April 10, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa, to George and Sylvia Gray Dorrell. He was an army veteran of World War II. On February 10, 1950, Dick married Etta Lorena Short in Des Moines, where they made their home. Dick (Popeye) was formerly employed with Firestone Tire & Rubber Company for 33 years, until his retirement in 1991. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved to bowl. Dick also loved chocolate and was an avid M&M Candies collector. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Etta L. Dorrell of Des Moines; two sons, Richard W. (Marcia) Dorrell, Jr. and Michael D. (Pamela) Dorrell both of Des Moines; two daughters, Susan L. (Steve) Johnson of Urbandale and Sherry A. (Kane) Hill of Des Moines; and seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Memorials may be made to First Federated Church.
