The Life of ROBERT OWEN VERNON

Robert O. Vernon, 78, previously of Pleasant Hill passed away November 7, 2009, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am Wednesday at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 am Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. He was born August 2, 1931, in Winterset to Lois and Howard Vernon. He graduated from Union High School in 1949, attended University of Arkansas and enlisted in the US Air Force. He worked security and in retirement was a Walmart greeter, known as "Walmart Bob." Bob was a member of the Pleasant Hill Free Church, Union Park Masonic Lodge and Za Ga Zig Shrine as well as American Legion Post 680. Bob had a great sense of humor and loved children. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Robert Jr., wife, Marjorie Vernon, and good friend, Gladys M. Tibbits. Bob is survived by a daughter, Tania (Craig) Sprague of Mapleton, Ill, also Kelly (Stapleford) Mull whom he helped raise; His son, Kim Strivers of Horsham, PA; stepdaughter, Julie Gibson, and stepson Roy Baker; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his brothers and sisters, Helen (Howard) Vaux of Union, Howard (Alma) Vernon Jr. of Iowa City, Shirley (Gerald) Berry of Des Moines, Dorn (Janice) Vernon of Mustang, OK, and Rita Pratt of Des Moines.
