The Life of THURSTON C BURKHOLDER

Thurston Claude Burkholder, 78, of Winterset, died Sunday at Winterset Care Center South of complication of dementia.  Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.  Burial is to be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

Mr. Burkholder was born in Sioux Rapids and moved to Winterset five years ago after living in DeSoto and Des Moines.  He retired as a meter reader for Iowa Power and Light Co., was an Army veteran of World War II and had been a member of Winterset American Legion Post, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workes and the Assembly of God in Des Moines.  He was a former chaplain for Polk County American Legion, a volunteer at Veterans Medical Center in Des Moines and an assistant troop leader for Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife, Helen; sons Lonnie of Indianola and Larry of Westlake Village, CA; a daughter, Cherry McElwee of Des Moines; seven stepchildren; six grandchildren; 26 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 41 step-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet firends from 6 to 8 p.m.
