Mike Merrifield, 58, died Monday September 19, 2005 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. 

A visitation with family will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.  Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, September 22 at the Point of Grace Church in Waukee (305 NE Dartmoor Dr), where Pastor Jason Stark will officiate.  Burial will be in the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8142 and American Legion, Post 184, Winterset.  Memorial contributions may be directed to a fund established in Mike''s name.

Mike was born December 8, 1946 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Charles and Margaret "Peggy" (Baldwin) Merrifield.  He graduated from Des Moines Tech High School in 1965, served in the United States Army and Navy during the Vietnam War, and later attended Des Moines Area Community College and Wichita Area Community College.  He married Barbara Eastman Watson on June 30, 1985, in Des Moines.

Mike retired in 1985 as an aerial photographer and later worked for the US Postal Service in Des Moines and the VA Administration in Wichita.  He was a life member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, founding member of Wichita Area Vietnam Vets, a life member of Disabled American Veterans, and a member of Kansas Vietnam Veterans and Family Reunion Association.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Winterset; his mother, Margaret Merrifield of Winterset; two daughters, Kristine Brown of Chesapeake, VA and Amy Glas of West Des Moines; three sons, Tim Glas of Lincoln, NE, Matt Glas of Lakewood, and Steve Glas of Monroe; his best friend, Edgil Bruce, Sr. of Urbandale; sister-in-law, Laraine Merrifield of Winterset; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles and his brother, Robert.
