The Life of Helen Sell Hicks
Obituary
Helen Sell Hicks, 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 14th, 2024.
Helen was welcomed into Heaven by her youngest son, Hilton Reaves Holdren; her parents, Ammon and Elizabeth Sell; brothers, Eddy and Johnny Sell; sisters, Phyllis Wagner, Peggy Altice, and Marie Wiley.
She is survived by her children; son, Steve Bowyer, his wife Betty; daughter, Kathy West, and her husband Michael; and her beloved granddaughters, Ashley Cayton, her husband Beau, Alyson West, and her husband Cole. Also surviving are her brothers, Bobby Sell, Charles Sell, and James Sell; and sisters, Doris Dooley, and June Dudley; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was a strong and determined woman. While raising three young children as a single mother, she put herself through nursing school. She found her life’s calling as a nurse for 42 years; serving 32 years at RMH and 10 years at American Red Cross. Spending time with her family and friends was the biggest joy in her life.
A Visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, from 6pm to 8pm at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.
A Funeral Service will occur at 10am, Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel, graveside to follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton.
In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Roanoke SPCA. Online condolences may be made at www.oakeys.com.
