The Life of Peggy Jaynes Irby

Peggy Jaynes Irby, 91, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 5, 2024. She was born in Erwin, Tennessee on August 25, 1932.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Gordon Irby; her siblings, Arthur Kenneth Jaynes Jr., Harold E. Jaynes, Betty Lou Jaynes, and Claudyne Jaynes Judy.

Peggy is survived by her nephew, Joey Judy, his wife Bambi, and their daughter, Gabrielle; her niece, Kathy Spencer, her husband Jamie and their son, Logan; all of Roanoke; and her nephew, Hal Jaynes and his daughter, Samantha Harris of Atlanta, Ga.

After graduating from East Tennessee State University, Peggy began her teaching career at Marion High School. She then came to Roanoke where she taught Business Education at William Byrd High School and was the head sponsor of the senior class for many years. Peggy loved running into her former students around town.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, the Red Hat Society, and was a long time member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She retired after 33 years of teaching and set out on her next adventure. Peggy and her husband started traveling throughout the United States, visiting approximately 49 states, including Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska. They loved meeting new friends and sharing fun and exciting experiences along the way. Their annual pilgrimage to the New Orleans Jazz Festival was something they especially enjoyed.

Peggy was fortunate to have many close friends in her life. A special thanks to Helen Hall, who has been friends with her for 67 years and visited Peggy often, sitting and sharing stories of their past.

The family would like to thank First Baptist Church of Roanoke Homebound Ministries, the nurses and staff of Cardinal Senior Living of Roanoke for loving and caring for Peggy for the past 13 1/2 years, and to Medi Home Health & Hospice for their care during her final months.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Oakey’s South Chapel with Pastor Wayne Gadman officiating. Interment will be private. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service.
