The Life of SHIRLEY M DUNBAR

Shirley Maxine Dunbar, 83, of Rocky Mount, Virginia passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4th, 2024 and is now in her eternal home in heaven. She was born on April 24th, 1940 in Beckley, West Virginia.

She devoted her life to her family where she received three of the greatest titles: mom, grandma, and GiGi. Shirley was known for mothering many of her children’s friends, as well as other children in her extended family. She always made sure everyone had what they needed and wanted above her own wants and needs. Christmas was her favorite time of the year, so much so that she would often watch Hallmark Christmas movies year-round. You could find her eating a small vanilla ice cream cone from DQ, or rooting on her favorite sports team the Baltimore Orioles. Shirley was a longtime member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church where she was a part of WOM. Cardinals were always her favorite bird, and she always said when a cardinal appears an angel is near. She is our angel now.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Charles Edward Dunbar Sr.; along with siblings, Betty, Sammy, Wesley, and Jimmy.

She is survived by her three children, Serena (Frank), Chuck (Missie), and Amy; her two grandchildren, Matthew (Kelly), and Lynsey (Matt); four great-grandchildren, Charleigh, Palmer, Madilynn, and Sutton; and three sisters, Cricket, Sandy, and Pam.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Flora Funeral Chapel with Pastor David McNew officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in memory of her to Sandy Ridge Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
