The Life of Mrs. Doris E. Hoffacker

Doris Elaine (Belle) Hoffacker, 93, died March 29, 2024, at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Kelly Drive. She was the wife of Guilford E. Hoffacker who died March 1, 2017. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on February 9, 2017.

She was born on November 10, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest daughter of Ephraim V. and Eartha I. (Devilbiss) Bell. She moved to York in 1953 when Gil returned from Army service in Germany.

She was a 70-year member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in North York where she was a member and teacher of the Good News Sunday School Class and served on Church Council and various committees. She was a Past President and Volunteer-of-the-Year of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Salvation Army and loved working in the Auxiliary’s Clothing Room for many years. She participated in Friendly Neighbors for many years.

Doris worked at the former Progressive Typographers (now Progressive Information Technologies) for over 31 years, retiring in 1988 as Proofroom Supervisor.

After retiring, she loved traveling and camping in the motorhome, spending many months in the condo at Myrtle Beach and in later years playing cards and games of all kinds with friends and neighbors in Susquehanna Village. She moved to SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Kelly Drive in 2021.

She leaves a niece Barbara (Brooks) Van Dusen and her husband, Eric of Pasadena, CA and a nephew Kenneth P. Brooks and his wife, Arlene of Glen Burnie, MD as well as great nieces and a nephew. She is also survived by some special people she chose to call her “nieces and nephews by choice” because they called her “Aunt Doris:” Carolyn Kerber and her husband, Ed of New Bern, NC and Brian Uppercue and his wife, Loretta of Land O’ Lakes, FL; as well as her church friends, Gail Bentzel and Garry Roberts.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul L. Bell and 3 sisters, Grace (Bell) Johnson, Evelyn (Bell) Brooks, and Eartha Mae (Bell) Brooks.

A Service of Christian Burial led by her pastor, the Rev. Beth A. Schlegel, STS will be on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 947 North George Street, York with a viewing from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
