The Life of James Preston Crump Jr

ames Preston Crump, Jr. “Jimmy”, 75, of Roanoke, VA passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024. After graduating from Cave Spring High School he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and then continued his education at Medical College of Virginia and received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Jimmy worked as a pharmacist until retiring from Revco/CVS and Roanoke A. I. Laboratories. As a young man, he attended Christ Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed farming, was a horseman, gardener, orchardist and a sportsman. Jimmy was also an equine reproduction research scientist. He was an accomplished author, having two internationally published scientific papers.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, James Preston Crump; mother, Marion Allen Crump; sister, Patricia Crump Lancaster.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julia Willis Crump “Judy”; sister, Carolyn Crump Burgess; nephews, Brian Lancaster and his wife, Sheila, Jonathan Burgess and his wife, Lauren; nieces, Linda Lancaster, Lori Hamlin and her husband, Rodney. Also surviving are Julia’s sons, Henry Stephen Hancock, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, John Edward Hancock and his wife, Michele and grandchildren, James Hancock and his wife, Emily, Mariana Hancock, Matthew Hancock and Julia Hancock. 

He will also be missed by his special friend and caregiver, Heather McDaniel.

The family would like to thank Friendship South nurses, therapists and staff for his care.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke, VA. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Oakey’s South Chapel.
