The Life of George K. Fischer Jr.

George K. Fischer Jr. of Roanoke, Va., soared to the heavens above on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the age of 93.

He was a native of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and attended the University of Kentucky, earning a degree in electrical engineering and an Air Force ROTC commission. While at UK, he joined the Triangle Fraternity and served as president for two years.

Upon graduating, he proudly served his country two years on active duty as an electronics officer in the USAF Air Research and Development Command.

Four days after his discharge from the Air Force, he married his college sweetheart, Peggy Ann Adams of Jenkins, Ky. They started their married life together in Schenectady, NY as George had accepted a job with General Electric Company in their technical marketing program. His next assignment with GE was in Salem, Va., and a few years later, he moved to the Roanoke sales office doing technical marketing and application engineering.

He left GE in 1969 to own and operate Fischer Electrical Construction Inc for thirty years. He and his dedicated and diligent employees performed a wide variety of electrical services for industrial plants, hospitals, colleges, and universities throughout the region.

Upon retirement, he enjoyed time with family, friends and neighbors as well as volunteering at the National D-Day Memorial for eight years. He was a member of several professional organizations including a 50 year membership in the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. George and Peggy spent many years square dancing locally and traveling to square dancing conventions. They also hosted and enjoyed years of playing couples bridge games. George was a long-time member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church.

His loving wife, Peggy, predeceased him. Survivors include his son, Richard (Martha); and grandchildren, Bradley Fischer (Rachel) and Ashleigh Musick (Matthew); great-grandsons, Daniel and Jacob Fischer; step grandchildren, Laura Brooke Rich (Kyle Counce) and Kathryn Tapp (Nick); as well as six step great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Lois Adams Miller; niece, Nancy Morrow (Bob); nephew, John Miller (Sandy); and his church family as well as his friends and the community at Brandon Oaks.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, January 31, 2024, from 6 until 8 p.m at Oakey's South Chapel. A service will take place in the Chapel at Brandon Oaks on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Keith Olivier presiding, assisted by the Rev. Gary Robbins.
