The Life of Lena Q. Mitchell

Celebrating the Wonderful Life of Lena Rachel Quesenberry Mitchell September 25th, 1924  -- January 4, 2024

A Joyful 99 Years Born in the charming community of Max Creek, VA (Pulaski County) to the loving Fred and Mae Quesenberry, Lena was the light in a family of 6 brothers and 2 sisters. She graduated from Draper High School in 1942 and went on to achieve her dreams at Bluefield Business College in 1944. During WWII, Lena contributed to the war effort at the NRV bagging plant in 1944-45. In 1946, she became a charter member and founder of a local church, spreading kindness and love to everyone around her. In 1949, Lena married the love of her life, Kenneth Mitchell. Their journey took them across several states as Kenneth developed his career in the newspaper business, and Lena thrived in various roles in the accounting and bookkeeping field. In 1956, they settled in Roanoke, VA, where Lena dedicated herself to raising her family for nearly 60 years. In 2015, she embarked on a new adventure, relocating to Newbern (Pulaski County) for a decade of final retirement surrounded by cherished family and friends.

Family was everything to Lena, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth: • Daughter: Deborah (Jeff) Purdy • Son: Kenneth Mitchell • Granddaughter: Adrienne Purdy (Lindsay) • Sister: Vivian Rigney • Numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by her kindness. Lena's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. May her memory be a source of joy, inspiration, and comfort to all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held at the Peter Creek Church of the Brothern on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 12:00PM. Friends may visit at Alders Gate UMC, Pulaski VA on Wednesday starting at 4PM for viewing. The interment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
