The Life of Bernice Otey

Bernice Evelyn Lee Otey of Botetourt County, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the age of 103. She was born in Botetourt County, Va., on January 11, 1920, one of 10 children.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Charles Otey; her parents, Emmett and Lura Lee; sisters, Pauline Shaw, Norma Lee, Dorothy Simmons, June Lee, Thelma Kyle, and Virgie Duncan; brothers, Emmett Lee Jr., Garland (Mack) Lee, and Jack Lee; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Lee.

She is survived by her sister, Audrey (Peach) Hawkins; sister-in-law, Charlotte Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Fincastle High School. Bernice worked for several companies including the Armor Meat Packaging Company, American Viscose, F.W. Woolworth, Yale and Towne, and Tultex where she retired in 1985.

She was a faithful member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church. She loved working in her flower garden and enjoyed sharing plants with family and friends. Before Facebook she kept up with all her extended family. Although she never had children, she raised many. Bernice cherished her family and was always ready to help them if they needed anything.

We would like to thank Jeanne Duncan and the staff of Jeanne’s Elderly Care for the care and love they gave Bernice while she was there. We would also like to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
