The Life of Mr Joseph Bradley Wilt

Joseph B. Wilt, 76, died Sunday, May 28, 2023 at York Hospital after a short illness. His children were by his side. A viewing will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Rd. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. at the church with Father Stephen Fernandes OFM Cap as celebrant. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc. 902 Mt. Rose Ave., is assisting the family. Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judith, who passed away in 2013. They were married for 43 years.

Joe was a lifelong resident of York, born March 27, 1947. He graduated from York High School in 1965 and attended Millersville State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in English (1969), and a Master of Education degree in English (1972). Joe taught English at Dover Area High School for 36 years, followed by six years as an adjunct professor at Harrisburg Area Community College.

Joe also coached boys basketball for 24 years, including Dover High J.V. and varsity teams. He was awarded York County Coach of the Year for the 1989-90 season by the York Daily Record. He took pride in the players he coached and the outstanding athletic success of players who went on to excel as collegiate athletes.

After his retirement, he enjoyed participating in a wide range of volunteer activities at Millersville University, including giving tours and providing professional guidance for students pursuing teaching careers. He also served as a spokesperson for students interested in careers in athletic coaching.

Joe is survived by his children, Elizabeth Wakelin of Nutley, NJ, Susan Mielke of Millsboro, DE, and Louis Wilt of York; and grandchildren, Madeline, Matilda, Jack, Aiden, Joey and Tristan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph B. & Judith S. Wilt Men’s Basketball Scholarship at Millersville University.
