An Angel I Never Met

Mrs. McLaughlin was a pen pal of my sister, Domenica Vinci. They corresponded when I was trying to get pregnant and when I eventually adopted. I'm not privy to their exact "conversations" but I do not my sister told her about my struggles.

When we finally adopted our son in March 2006, my sister shared the news with Mrs. McLaughlin.  I became aware of her prayers for me when my sister gave me an angel ornament that Mrs. McLaughlin gifted to us.

She certainly was a special lady.

With Fondness,

 Joanne Straub

A Unique and Cherished Bond

Another lifetime ago, I worked with your Father at Dechert.  We became fast friends and, even after he retired, he would come into the office from time to time to visit.  When he got sick and could no longer make his visits, he would ask your Mother to call me so that we could catch up.  When he passed, I was out of town and couldn’t make the services.  I sent a sympathy card to your Mother and she, in turn, sent an acknowledgement to me.  That was the beginning of a wonderful “pen pal” relationship, which lasted for decades.  We never met, nor did we ever speak, yet it is one of my most treasured friendships, truly amazing and unique.  She would tell me all about the “Make It So” farm, the animals there, her jigsaw puzzles, and her Sudokus.  I especially loved how she signed her letters, either “Lovingly” or “Lovingly yours”.  I told her I was going to steal that, which I did, and I will “lovingly” think of her when I do so in the future.

I remember how hard it was for her to move out of the home she shared with your Father, BUT I also know that she felt welcomed, loved, and well taken care of by Dennis and Kris (her words).

Your Mother was incredibly special to me, and I am certain to all who knew her.  She leaves behind a beautiful legacy in all of you.  You gave your Mother a wonderful life, and I truly hope you find comfort in knowing that.

Lovingly yours,

Domenica Vinci
