The Life of Mary F. Wood

Mary Frances Williams Wood, 92 of Fairfield, the beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Wood, entered into eternal life on May 29, 2019 at the Watermark in Bridgeport. She was born August 12, 1926 in Norwalk, the daughter of Harry and Dora von Holtz Williams and was a longtime Fairfield resident prior to moving to the Watermark at 3030 Park Retirement Community three and a half years ago.
Mary was raised in Greenwich and attended Cos Cob School and Greenwich High School. After the family moved to Fairfield, she graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School, Class of 1944. She subsequently worked for Bruner - Ritter Company in Bridgeport. In 1947, she married Joseph J. Wood, who passed away in 1990.
Mary was a member of the Ladies' Guild and Senior Group at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, the Young at Heart Club at Black Rock Congregational Church, the Red Hat Society and the Bigelow Senior Center where she was very active with the Crafts Group. She was a volunteer at the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital, St. Thomas Aquinas Church and the Bigelow Senior Center. At the time of her death, she was a member of AARP and the Eddy Family Association.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Louise E. Miller and her husband, Frederick E. Miller, Jr. of Fairfield, her son, Leonard J. Wood and his wife Margaret Morgan Wood of Newtown, her granddaughter, Dora Wood Sorg and her husband Casey J. Sorg of Newtown and her great-granddaughter, Addison Renee Sorg of Newtown. She will also be missed by her sister-in-law, Susan Wood of Coventry, her brother-in-law, Ronald Knight of Fairfield, her cousin, Helen Sabia of Olympia, WA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Ida M. Williams and her brother, Robert W. Williams and his wife, Madalyn Sabo Williams.
Her family would like to thank the staff of the Springs at Watermark and VITAS Hospice for the compassionate and loving care they provided to Mary.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 leaving the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield at 9:30 a.m. to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may greet her family on Monday, June 3, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
