The Life of Robert E. Johnson Sr.

Robert E. Johnson Sr., a United States Army veteran, died on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018. He was 90.

He was known as “Mr. Brother.” He was born on Nov. 19, 1927, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late Robert L. Johnson and Addean Johnson.

He spent most of his upbringing in Cartersville, Ga., with his parents and two sisters, the late Addean “Girlie” Johnson and Orie L. Hall.

Johnson attended the Summer Hill School in Bartow County, Georgia. In 1946, he was inducted into the Army as a military rifleman and served in World War II with distinction, receiving the Victory Ribbon honor.

The Johnson family relocated to Philadelphia, where he met and married the late Vivian Johnson nee Bailey. He and his wife reared four children.

Johnson worked for Acme Markets for more than 25 years. He maintained private contracts with the AAA Mid Atlantic Corp. and was employed by The Philadelphia Tribune as a delivery driver. He found his final home at the Budget Rent a Car corporation and did not retire permanently until in his early 80s.

He is survived by: his children, Pungo Bailey, Janet Johnson, Robert Johnson Jr. and Robin Johnson; grandchildren: Dr. Eboni Freeman, Seniga Bailey, Darius Golback, Dorion Golback, Myora Bailey and Kai Campfield; and great-grandchildren, Emani, Samaj, Sara and Skylar.

A memorial service will be held Nov. 17 at 11 at West Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd.
