The Life of George Edward Oldenburg

George Edward Oldenburg peacefully went to be with his Lord and his beloved wife on October 19, 2017, as he was surrounded by his family. George was born on March 21, 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the son of Frank and Mary (Devine) Oldenburg and was the second oldest of nine children (Frank, Delores, James, Lorraine, Ted, Rosemary, John, and Mary Ann). He graduated from McBride Catholic Boys High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He signed a professional baseball contract at the age of 18 with the St. Paul, Minnesota, American Association. George played for the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees minor league organizations. He managed the Idaho Russets in Idaho Falls, Idaho. George married his wife of 72 years, Frances (Gallagher) Oldenburg, in 1939. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, as well as, three of his brothers. While living in Baton Rouge, after the war, he was the founding Commander of the Legion Village Post, American Legion of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. George and Frances were life-time members of the Third Order of Mary, Religious Lay Society; they also served 12 years as chair couple of St. Charles Borromeo, Religious Vocation Promotions, Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. George was a Serra Club member. George and Frances retired in 1973 and moved to a retirement community in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, where they lived for 38 years. They were avid golfers and continued to be active in their church, St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church. George volunteered 25 years of service to the Izard County Medical Center, as a member of the board of directors; he was board chairman for two terms.

George Oldenburg is survived by his devoted daughter, Frances (Paul) Comeaux; his two loving grandsons, George Paul (Sara) and Shep Francis (Rachel) Comeaux; his two caring great-granddaughters, Clelie (Gavin) and Gabby Comeaux, his former granddaughter-in-law, Roz (Kyle) Thibodeaux, and six step-great-grandchildren, Patrick, Gavin, Lexi, Carter, Bennett and Gracie. He is also survived by his brother, Ted Oldenburg, and “brother,” Patrick Mulligan. He was a dear son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend!

It was George’s request to have a Funeral Mass said in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, at St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church. It will be on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00am.

Burial service will be November 22, 2017, at 11:00am at Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum.

On one of George’s last days, he told his daughter Frances to tell all his family and friends, “I will love them until the end of time.”
