The Life of Maryann Longacre

LONGACRE, Maryann C. (nee Thorn) of Philadelphia, PA, age 71.

Passed away peacefully on September 21, 2017 several days after suffering a stroke.

Born in Memphis, TN, October 21, 1945, to Robert A. Thorn and Mary Agnes (nee Giaccaglini). The youngest of four children, Maryann was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Rose Marie Cosentino (Rudolph V.) and Frances Springer (Larry).

During her young adulthood, Maryann endured an amputation due to cancer, and wasn’t expected to survive.  Not only did she survive, she prevailed and flourished. She earned a college degree (Memphis State University), married, earned two master’s degrees (University of Mississippi and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), and almost finished a doctoral program (University of Pennsylvania). In time she divorced, changed her career, and lived an active life, during which she made many friends, built a successful professional career, established a home and happy marriage, and pursued many interests. After a 25 year career with the City of Philadelphia, she retired in 2008 as the Director of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for the City Planning Commission.

Maryann was adventurous; she loved to travel, to learn, and to laugh. She was positive and upbeat, clever and funny, generous and loving. She never stopped learning. She faced adversity, including serious health problems over many years, with grace, courage and good humor.

She is survived by her spouse, Liz Rosenberg, brother Robert Thorn, several cousins, and nieces and nephews, including Matthew Springer and Laurel Springer Ampuero, with whom she was particularly close. Maryann will be missed by them and her many dear friends.

Instead of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice, or to help the human and animal victims of war and disasters. One charity close to Maryann’s heart was St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital. She loved her cats; Brenda’s Cat Rescue and other pet rescue organizations could use your help.

Maryann’s Life Celebration will be Saturday, October 21st at the Conservatory at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 215 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd from 11 am to 2 pm. There will be a short non-denominational memorial service and luncheon to share stories and remember the life she lived to the fullest. Anyone who would like to speak during the service is encouraged to do so.

Please don’t feel you need to wear black. Maryann wanted a party.
