The Life of DOROTHY MARIE BRAGDON BECK
Dorothy Marie Beck, 85, of Johnston, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017, at Bishop Drumm in Johnston surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Johnston with burial at Highland Memory Gardens. Friends may call on Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines.
Dorothy was born February 8, 1932, in Indianola, IA, daughter of the late Frank and Clarinda Jane (Ogan) Miller. She received her education in Des Moines where she graduated from North High School in 1950. She continued her education at Grandview College and completed her Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University.
She married George “Ned” Bragdon on November 28, 1959, after his death she married Frank “Norman” Beck on September 28, 1985 (It seems Dorothy liked her husbands to have two first names).
Dorothy started her teaching career in Dayton, IA where she worked for two years and later the Des Moines public schools for a total of 38 years, most of those at Hillis Elementary School until her retirement. She had a fond place in heart for the less fortunate and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church and enjoyed volunteering for many activities. She also enjoyed mall walking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; George “Ned” Bragdon and Frank “Norman” Beck and a sister Phyllis Cassaday.
Survivors include two children; Kent (Sandy) Bragdon and Michele Daves both of Urbandale, a sister Jean P’Pool of Idaho Falls, ID, and four grandchildren; Allie (David) Sheehan, Colby Bragdon, Spencer Daves and Sawyer Daves, a step daughter Cathy Beck-Cross (Eldon) of Johnston and step grandchildren; Alec and Ian Beck-Cross and several nieces and nephews.
