The Life of REBA MARIE NICHOL

On a cool September day in the year of 1931, Ellery Emery and Reba Marie Shaler welcomed baby, Reba Marie to their family. She was born small in stature, but mighty in will and spirit.

Throughout her young life she grew to love learning, making friends and chasing cows in the pasture. Reba and her sister had a rich, adventuresome and exhilarating life. Stories that were shared with the rest of the family with great laughter.

Reba married John Robert Nichol in October of 1950. She traveled to California during John’s service days. Reba worked in San Diego at the telephone company. When they returned to Des Moines they were ready to start their family. They bought a new home and it wasn’t long before John Timothy came along as their new pride and joy. Thirteen months later, Rebecca Marie was born and joined this wonderful little family of four.

Reba and John continued a wonderful life of raising their children, teaching at First Presbyterian Church, United School of the Church and throughout the Synod. Reba also worked for the Crop Office and the Des Moines Public School District. She worked as a Media Specialist, School Secretary and a Librarian. Reba found her work with children to be most rewarding and students today still seek her out in public places to see if she remembers them. She had a passion for learning and encouraged young people to explore the world around them. She was greatly loved by all.

Reba has always been the creative and inspirational force behind the “Reba and John Team”. Their constant work on their home and their creation of their get-away home in Arkansas. Their planning and goal setting along with follow through is an example for all their family.

March, 2006 became the first time in over 56 years that John and Reba were separated with John’s passing. Still through her grief, Reba had maintained her home and worked to keep up her spirits. Reba is a beautiful spirit and a believer. Her family feels blessed to know and to love Reba.

Reba Marie Nichol entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, July 30, 2017. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 4, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 3100 Easton Blvd, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
