The Life of JOHN MARVIN VAN GINKEL

Marvin Van Ginkel, age 90, of Des Moines, died peacefully Monday afternoon, January 2, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Visitation with Marvin''s family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 5th with a Celebration of Life Service at 10 a.m. Friday, January 6th at The Well Covenant Church, 2625 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50313.  Graveside services will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Rites being presented by the Cumming American Legion.

Marvin was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa.  He graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1943.  He then enlisted into the United States Navy, serving his country honorably during World War II.  He married Ina Belle Kinzie on June 1, 1947 and to this union had two children, Debbie and Tim.

Following the service Marvin returned home to work as a butcher and meat cutter at his father''s business, Van Ginkel & Son''s Grocery on SE 14th Street.  In 1967, he purchased his own grocery store, Marv''s SuperValu in Albia, Iowa.  He ran this business until 1975 when he went to work for IGA grocery store in Knoxville and later to the IGA in Ankeny, retiring in 1991.  Marvin at one-time was a member of the Free Masons, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  After retirement he and Ina Belle had a small crafting business making various things out of wood.

He is survived by his children, Debbie (Rick) Judge of Albia, Iowa and Tim (Renee) Van Ginkel of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; three siblings, Mary Louise Wheeler of Des Moines, Charlotte Monical of Bettendorf, and Jack Van Ginkel of Urbandale; 7 grandchildren, Candace (Jamie), Tori (Jeff), Matt (Gina), Jeni (Jason), Eric (Kim), John (Jill), and Joe (Alysha); and 14 great-grandchildren, Louie, Fina, Wyatt, Jayette, Luke, Chase, Erica, Dylan, Parker, Jordan, Jenna, Jaycie, Talan, and Rhett.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005; and two brothers, Harold and Dale.
