The Life of John R Mooney Cpl.

Corporal John R. Mooney, Jr., USMC, 1924-1945

John R. Mooney Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Mooney Sr., he felt a profound sense of patriotism. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year at Lansdowne High School, missing commencement with the class of 1942. As a member of the 4th Marine Division, he was involved in heavy fighting on Saipan and Tinian Islands in the Marianas and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in that campaign. Tragically, John was killed in action on February 26, 1945, shortly after recovering from his earlier wounds. He was 21.

This was my uncle Jack. Although I never knew him, my mother was always devoted to his memory. I visited his grave with my cousins in June 2012 for the first time. Thanks so much for your listings.
