The Life of Lewellyn Siess

DEATH OF LLEWELLEN SIESS.

LLEWELLYN SIESS was born at Graceham, Maryland. August 22, 1827. He moved to Ohio at the age of 15 and on April 17, 1851, he was married to Miss Elizabeth  Raber. To this union were born six children, two of whom, a girl and a boy, died at an early age. Four children were present to see the body of their father laid in its last resting place.

Fifty years ago he gave his heart to God and his hand to the Methodist church. He was a man of great faith and was instrumental in the conversion of many souls, among whom was his brother, Josiah, who was a member of the South Kansas Conference for twenty-four years. The deceased was a great Bible student, reading the word daily and feasting on the hymns. He always had family prayer, and his great desire, the last expression of which was only a few hours prior to his death, was that his children should all dwell with him in the beautiful glory world. God was his helper and his strength.

The above is an obituary read from the pulpit of the M. E. church in this city over the remains of the late Llewellyn Siess, who departed this life Saturday, January 26, at 10:15 a. m. The deceased had been confined to his bed for the past five months and required the constant care of his wife and relatives.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church last Monday at 2 o'clock by Dr. J. G. Henderson, a former pastor and a friend of the deceased, assisted by Rev. N. A. Shedd of the First Presbyterian church. Mrs. Ellen Pile, a daughter of the deceased, was the only member of the family present at the time of his death. In the morning prior to his death Mr. Siess ate a heartier breakfast than usual and a few minutes before the sudden change in his condition came upon him, his devoted wife, now 75 years of age, had gone up town to procure provisions for Sunday. Before she had quite reached the store she was overtaken and notified of the critical condition of her husband, but before she could reach home he had quietly passed away while sitting in a chair. There was little or no indication of suffering and the deceased was conscious only a part of the time prior to his death.

Thirty-eight years ago the deceased and his wife came west from Ohio and located in Kansas City where they resided for one year. They then moved to Johnson county and settled upon a farm on the Black Bob, where they lived and prospered until about four years ago when they moved to Olathe and built them a home on north Kansas avenue, where they have since resided. Both of these venerable people have been highly respected and loved by all who have had the pleasure of knowing them intimately.

Perhaps the greatest and best thing that can be said for them is that they were honest and strictly just with all with whom they had to deal and that they were liberal in all matters pertaining to the good of humanity. In church work they have always been among the most liberal in giving of their earthly possessions.

The deceased leaves a wife, three daughters and one son, all of whom were present at the funeral. They are: Mrs. Ellen Pile of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Sarah Casebeer of Lewisburg, Kansas, Mrs. Emma Hines of Spring Hill and Frank G. Siess of Argentine, Kansas. Other relatives who were present at the funeral were: Mrs. E. O. French, a sister, of Winfield; Mrs. Cathrine Siess, a sister-in-law, of Kansas City, and two children; Mrs. Aurelia Siess, a sister-in-law, of Olathe; Mr. Geo. Casebeer and two daughters; A. Hines and daughter of Spring Hill; Mrs. Frank Siess of Kansas City and Miss Rachel French of Kansas City.
