The Life of Donald Lee Russell

DONALD LEE RUSSELL 

Donald Lee Russell passed into the arms of his Lord Saturday, July 29th, at an area Olathe hospital after battling a respiratory illness for a short time. Don was born May 27th, 1929, in Bonita, Kansas to George and Evelyn (Kuhlman) and was raised on the family farm. While growing up, he was active in 4-H, FFA, livestock judging teams and competitive sports, especially baseball. From 1947 to 1950, Don played on several area baseball teams including The Olathe Cardinals Town Team, managed by Slew "Bum" Phillips, The Spring Hill Merchants, managed by George Russell, and the Paola Indians. He played second base, third base, outfield, but his favorite position was catcher. He was a lifelong baseball enthusiast and always looked for a game to enjoy, whether it be local youth, high school or professional teams. He attended Olathe Schools, graduating from Olathe High School in 1947. He farmed prior to being drafted into the Army during the Korean War, where he proudly served his country as a Private 2nd Class. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart Award as well as the Medal of Honor. He spent a year recovering from his battle wounds before returning home. Upon his return to Bonita, he joined his father and brother in forming Russell Grain and Feed. He was a lifelong farmer and businessman. He married Joan Norris in St. Joseph, Missouri on March 4th, 1955, and they made their home in Olathe, where she survives today. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2005 at their home church, First Baptist of Olathe. They celebrated with their three children, Sandy Reid of Olathe, Greg (Patricia) Russell of Olathe and Jeff Russell of Liberty. They all survive. He is also survived by five granddaughters, Amanda, Danielle, Jacque and Denyse Russell of Liberty and Beth Russell of Olathe. He is survived by one brother, Roger Russell of Olathe, a great aunt, Doris Miles of Shawnee and many nieces and nephews. Don was a lifelong Johnson County Resident. He looked forward to the Johnson County Fair and Olathe Old Settlers celebration, where he enjoyed visiting with old friends, neighbors and family. His visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church of Olathe on Tuesday, August 1st, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the church Wednesday, August 2nd at 10 a.m. Published in the Kansas City Star on 7/30/2006.
