The Life of Isaac Cooper Stuck

Obituary.

Mr. I. C. Stuck who died at Merriam, Kansas, on Wednesday morning of last week was a native of Virginia and was born 1829; he studied civil engineering in Washington, D. C. from 1842 to 1847, and in 1848 commenced work on the Chesepeake and Ohio canal; in 1851 he was employed as engineer on the North River canal; in 1852 he went to New Jersey, and was on the Morris & Essex Railroad as division engineer; in 1854 he was for a time employed as a draftsman in the office of the Iron Mountain Railroad at St. Louis, Mo., and was afterwards employed in the construction of the road but in 1855 he was returned to Washington, D. C.

In April of the same year he came to Kansas where he was for a long time engaged in surveying for the government, continuing until 1860 when he settled on a farm in Monticello township in this county. During the war he was Captain of Company C. 13th, K. S. M. and saw considerable active service on the western border of Missouri. Mr. Stuck went to New Mexico in 1866 and spent two years in government surveying in that Territory, when he returned to Johnson county and settled on the farm just southwest of Olathe; was elected county surveyor in 1869, and after two years devoted his whole attention to the farm for a number of years.

In 1886 he went to Wyandotte and was employed as draftsman in the office of the Wyandotte & Northwestern Railroad. During this he was elected President of the Engineer''s Union of Kansas City, Mo.

His health failing last summer he returned to his home where he has resided until the date of his death. His funeral took place from the Baptist church in this city on Thursday last, the services at the church being conducted by Rev. R. P. Stephenson, assisted by Prof. Rothwell, President of William-Jewell College of Liberty, Mo.

He was buried in the Olathe cemetery, the services at the grave being conducted by the Masonic fraternity of Olathe, the deceased having been a member of De Soto Lodge, No. 40. Mr. Stuck leaves a wife and four children, three sons and one daughter, besides a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.
